Website design in Widnes and Runcorn: clear sites that bring in local enquiries

A website is not a brochure that sits there looking nice. For a Halton business it has one job: turn the people searching for what you do into phone calls and enquiries. I am Danny, I run Local Web Studio from Prescot, roughly fifteen minutes away, and I work with businesses across both towns.

Halton is one borough and two towns facing each other across the Mersey, joined by the Silver Jubilee Bridge and the Mersey Gateway. On the Widnes side that means Farnworth, Ditton, Hough Green, Upton Rocks, Halebank, Appleton and Cronton. On the Runcorn side, Halton Village, Weston, Beechwood, Castlefields, Murdishaw, Preston Brook, Daresbury, Sandymoor and Norton. Most of the owners I speak to are not quiet because they are bad at the job. They are quiet because the people looking for them never get as far as their phone number.

The enquiry you are missing every week

When someone in Widnes or Runcorn needs a plumber, a consultant or a builder, they search, they glance at the top few results, and they contact one. Google reports that around three quarters of people who run a local search visit or contact a business within a day. That is a fast-moving window, and you are either in it or you are not.

The businesses winning those enquiries are the ones that:

  • Show up when someone searches
  • Explain clearly what they do and where they work
  • Make it effortless to get in touch

If your site does not do all three, the enquiry goes to whoever's does. Ongoing SEO can widen that window further, by putting you in front of more of those searches in the first place.

There is a Halton wrinkle nobody else writes about. The Mersey Gateway toll quietly shapes who trades where. Plenty of Halton businesses work both sides of the water without a second thought, and plenty of customers assume they do not, because the toll is the first thing that comes to mind when a Runcorn address turns up in a Widnes search. That assumption is enough to stop the call. Saying it plainly on the site, that you cover both towns and what that means for a job, removes a doubt that is costing enquiries right now. Have a look at the competing pages on this search and you will notice not one of them mentions it.

What stops a site from converting

Plenty of local businesses have a website and still get nothing from it. Usually it is one of these.

ProblemWhat it costs you
Slow or clunky on a phoneVisitors leave before they read anything
Vague about your actual servicesPeople cannot tell if you are right for them
Contact details hidden or fiddlyThe enquiry never happens
Not set up for GoogleNobody finds it in the first place
Names Widnes and nothing elseYou never surface for Runcorn, Daresbury or Preston Brook
No sign of real, finished workNothing separates you from the other five results
Looks datedQuietly chips away at trust
Annotated homepage showing a clear headline, services and a prominent call button
A converting homepage at a glance: a headline that says what you do, services you can scan in seconds, and a call button that is impossible to miss.

Fixing these is not complicated. It is just rarely done properly, which is exactly the gap a good local web design build fills.

The phone point deserves a line of its own. A lot of the searching around here happens on a mobile, stood in someone's kitchen or parked up between jobs, and the visitor is deciding in a few seconds whether to press your number or go back to the results. If they have to pinch the screen to read your services, or hunt for a phone number tucked behind a menu, they are gone. You never find out it happened, which is the worst part: the site looks fine to you, because you already know where everything is.

What a website costs in Widnes and Runcorn

We talk first. If it looks like a good fit, I put a homepage concept together so you can see the direction, and only then does a number appear. It is fixed, it is in writing, and it does not move afterwards. Typical starting points.

Every build includes hosting, domain setup and basic SEO. Care plans start at £65 a month if you would rather I handled updates and support afterwards, and they are optional, not bundled in. The pricing page has the line-by-line version if you want to read it before we speak.

What moves a Halton business up that list is rarely vanity. It is how many different things you sell. A sole trader with one trade and one catchment wants Essentials and nothing more, and I will say so. A firm running four service lines across both towns needs a proper page for each of them, which is Signature. Anything with a booking calendar, a payment or a login is Bespoke by definition, not by upsell.

Before you decide anything, do the sum in the other direction. Work out what one new customer is worth to you across a year, then hold it next to the figures above. For most trades and clinics in the borough the site pays for itself inside a handful of jobs. If your numbers say otherwise, I would rather tell you that on the phone than take the money and hand you something that will not earn its keep.

A studio built around getting you results, not selling you extras

Local Web Studio is one person, start to finish. That keeps it quick, clear and honest.

  • The person you message first is the person who builds it and the person who answers afterwards
  • A price agreed in writing before I start, and no invoice you were not expecting
  • Essentials and Signature builds are usually live inside a week
  • The site, the design and the domain are yours, and nothing ties you to me once it is done

I should be straight with you about one thing: I have not built for a Halton business yet. The nearest finished work is Marlborough Builders in Prescot, a building firm whose site sets out four separate divisions without turning into a list, and Pure Eden Wellbeing in St Helens, a holistic therapy studio on Bridge Street. Both are roughly fifteen minutes away and both are live, so you can go and look at them rather than take my word for anything.

More examples are in the recent work section, and you can read about hiring a web designer in Merseyside if you want the wider picture first.

Now the part most studio pages leave out. Search for web design in Widnes or Runcorn yourself and you will find studios trading in the borough far longer than I have, carrying more reviews, sat above a page of agencies who have each written their own Halton page, same as this one. I am not going to pretend that away. What I will put against it is that you deal with me and not a sales team, the price is agreed in writing before a line of code exists, nothing comes off a template, and there are finished sites fifteen minutes up the road you can judge me on instead of a list of promises.

Getting found locally, in plain terms

Three things do most of the heavy lifting for a local business.

Built to be ranked

A website built so Google can read and rank it, with proper titles, headings and service pages.

On the local map

A complete Google Business Profile so you appear on the map and in local results.

Named where you work

The areas you actually cover, written down. Someone searching from Murdishaw or Hough Green should see their own place on the page, not guess whether you travel.

All three come as part of the build on the Signature package and up.

One local quirk catches people out. Halton splits cleanly down the river for postcodes: Widnes is WA8, Runcorn is WA7. Two prefixes, one borough, and a customer who sees the wrong one often assumes you are somewhere else entirely. That is a moment of doubt you can remove for free. If you cover both towns, put both postcodes and both names on the site instead of leaving people to work it out from your address.

The other thing worth knowing is that no two people search the same way. One types website design Widnes, the next types web design Runcorn, the next just asks an assistant to find someone nearby. Same person, same need, three different phrasings, and none of them care which one you optimised for. A site written in plain English about what you do and where you do it tends to pick up all three. One written in marketing language picks up none of them.

Working across the boundary? There are separate guides for Warrington, St Helens, Prescot, Knowsley and Liverpool, plus the Merseyside hiring checklist if you want to compare designers before speaking to anyone.

Get in touch
Both. Halton is one borough and I treat it as one patch, so Widnes and Runcorn get the same attention. The bridges are the short part of the journey from Prescot.
I am based in Prescot, which is roughly fifteen minutes from Widnes and not much more from Runcorn. Most of the work is done by phone and email, and I will come out to you when it is worth doing in person.
Those and the rest of the borough. In Widnes: Ditton, Hough Green, Upton Rocks, Halebank, Appleton and Cronton. In Runcorn: Weston, Beechwood, Castlefields, Murdishaw, Preston Brook, Sandymoor and Norton.
Essentials is £750, Signature is £1,450 and Bespoke starts at £2,250. Care plans are optional and start at £65 a month. The figure is agreed in writing before any work begins and it does not move afterwards.
Yes. A few photos and basic details are usually enough. I shape it into a proper site.
You get a full walkthrough of how everything works, and the site is yours to keep. A care plan from £65 a month is there if you would rather I handled updates and support, but nothing stops working if you do not take one.

Let's talk about your Widnes or Runcorn business

Tell me what you do and which parts of the borough you cover, and you will get straight advice back rather than a pitch. If it looks like a good fit, a homepage concept follows, so the quality is something you can see before any money changes hands.
